Secret Spots in Ithaka

Off the Beaten Path

Ithaka Beyond the Guidebook

Ithaka rewards the curious traveller. Beyond the main beaches and villages, the island holds ancient springs, mountaintop monasteries, secluded bays, and mythological sites that most visitors never find.

Fountain of Arethusa

A natural spring on the southern coast linked to Homer's Odyssey. The hike down through cypress and olive groves is as rewarding as the destination — a serene freshwater source overlooking the sea.

Access: Moderate 40-minute hike from the road above. Bring sturdy shoes and water.

💡 Go early morning to have the path to yourself. The view from the cliffside is extraordinary.

Cave of the Nymphs (Marmarospilia)

A small cave above Vathi traditionally identified as the place where Odysseus hid the treasures given to him by the Phaeacians. The site itself is modest, but the mythological significance and the views over the bay make it worth the short detour.

Access: Short drive from Vathi followed by a brief uphill walk.

💡 Combine with a visit to Dexa Beach below for a half-day excursion.

Monastery of Kathara

Perched high on Mount Niritos, this monastery offers some of the most dramatic panoramic views on the island — stretching across to Kefalonia and the open Ionian Sea. The chapel interior houses notable icons.

Access: Driveable via winding mountain road from Vathi (approx. 20 min).

💡 Visit on a clear day for views that extend to the horizon. Modest dress required.

Mnimata Bay

A tiny, secluded swimming cove south of Vathi with deep blue water and dramatic cliff walls. Far from the beaten path, this is Ithaka at its most unspoiled.

Access: Accessible by boat or a steep, unmarked path — suitable for confident hikers only.

💡 Best reached by renting a small boat from Vathi harbour for a half-day coastal exploration.

The Boulders of Anogi

Enormous natural rock formations scattered across the plateau near Anogi village. These monolithic stones, some several metres tall, create a surreal landscape that feels prehistoric and untouched.

Access: Short walk from Anogi village square. Drive from Vathi takes about 25 minutes.

Perachori Wine Path

The hillside village of Perachori, just above Vathi, was historically known for its wine production. Quiet stone paths wind through old cellars and terraced vineyards with sweeping views over the bay.

Access: 10-minute drive from Vathi, or a rewarding uphill walk.

💡 Ask locally about any seasonal wine tastings — they happen informally and are a genuine experience.

Lazaretto Island

A tiny islet in the middle of Vathi harbour, once used as a quarantine station and later a prison. Today it's a peaceful spot visible from the waterfront, best admired from the shore or by kayak.

Access: Visible from the Vathi waterfront. Reachable by kayak or small boat.

Homer's School (Stavros)

Near Stavros, ruins known locally as Homer's School sit on a hilltop with commanding views. While the connection to Homer is legendary rather than historical, the atmosphere is contemplative and the panorama is stunning.

Access: Short walk from Stavros village centre.

💡 Combine with a visit to the Archaeological Collection of Stavros nearby.
