Practical Travel Tips for Ithaka

Before You Go

Everything You Need to Know

Ithaka is a small, welcoming island — but getting here requires a bit of planning. Here's everything you need to make your journey smooth and your stay enjoyable.

Getting to Ithaka

  • Ithaka has no airport. The island is reached by ferry from the Greek mainland or neighbouring islands.
  • The most common route is flying into Kefalonia (EFL) and taking a ferry from Sami to Pisaetos, Ithaka (approximately 40 minutes).
  • Alternatively, fly to Preveza/Aktion (PVK) and ferry from Astakos or Nidri (Lefkada) to Frikes or Pisaetos.
  • Ferries also connect Ithaka to Patras and Killini on the Peloponnese.
  • Check ferry schedules in advance — frequency varies by season. Book vehicle tickets early in July–August.

Getting Around the Island

  • A car is recommended for exploring Ithaka comfortably, especially for reaching beaches and northern villages.
  • Roads are paved but narrow and winding in places. Drive carefully, especially on mountain roads.
  • Car and scooter rental is available in Vathi. Book ahead in peak season.
  • Vathi itself is walkable — shops, tavernas, and the harbour are all within easy reach of the villa.
  • Water taxis operate in summer between Vathi and some beaches (e.g., Gidaki).
  • There is a limited local bus service connecting Vathi, Stavros, Kioni, and Frikes.

Best Time to Visit

  • Peak season is July and August — warmest weather, busiest period, and all services operating.
  • June and September offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Many consider this the ideal time.
  • May and October are pleasant for hiking and exploring, though some seasonal businesses may be closed.
  • Sea temperature is swimmable from late May to early October.
  • Winter is very quiet with limited services, though the island's beauty remains striking.

Practical Essentials

  • Currency is the Euro (€). Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops, but carry some cash for smaller businesses and boat taxis.
  • ATMs are available in Vathi. There are no ATMs in Kioni, Frikes, or smaller villages.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink. Bottled water is inexpensive and widely available at shops throughout the island.
  • Pharmacies and a medical centre are located in Vathi. For emergencies, the nearest hospital is in Kefalonia.
  • Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
  • Shops may close during the afternoon siesta (roughly 2–5 PM), especially in summer.

Staying Connected

  • Mobile coverage is generally good in Vathi and main villages. Signal can be weak in remote areas and some beaches.
  • The villa provides Wi-Fi.
  • EU mobile roaming applies for European visitors. Non-EU visitors may wish to purchase a local SIM card in Vathi.
  • Download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me) before arrival — useful for hiking trails and remote beaches.

Packing Tips

  • Comfortable walking shoes for village exploration and light hiking.
  • Water shoes are useful for pebble beaches.
  • Sun protection: high-SPF sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential in summer.
  • A light jacket or wrap for cooler evenings, especially in June and September.
  • Snorkelling gear if you have your own — the water clarity is exceptional.
  • A reusable water bottle — refill stations are becoming more common.
  • Modest clothing for visiting monasteries and churches (cover shoulders and knees).
